KNOWLEDGE, SCIENCE, AND TECHNOLOGY
With the spread of Islam, Arabic became the new language of science. Muslim rulers promoted scientific scholarship from the earliest centuries of Islam, often involving large numbers of scholars from different ethnic and religious backgrounds. They made significant advances in medicine, astronomy, mathematics, geography, and engineering, and paved the way for many scientific discoveries of modern times. Many technologies and objects were developed to respond to practical needs, from religious practices and agriculture, to travel by land and sea, which all require precise ways to measure time and location. Scholars in the Islamic world also sought to understand the universe and its mechanisms, defining and describing the Earth and the place of human beings in it.
