THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE CALIPHATE
The rise of Islam was linked to rapid territorial expansion by tribes of the Arabian Peninsula. They formed a territory that expanded over three continents, from Mecca to Spain, and to the Indus Valley and China. The futuhat (military conquests) also led to political and cultural changes. This included the creation of the khilafa (caliphate), or state, around the Caliph as spiritual and political leader of the Muslim community; the establishment of Arabic as official administrative language; and the creation of a new calendar in 1 AH (622 CE) – the date at which the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) departed from Mecca to Medina (hijra) and established the first capital city of the Islamic world. The objects on display in this gallery explore artistic production in three of the most significant caliphates of Islamic history.
