RELIGIOUS LIFE IN THE ISLAMIC WORLD
The community of Muslims, the umma, shares common beliefs based on the divine message from God revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). At the core of the religious practice are five arkan al-islam (pillars), beginning with the shahada (profession of faith), ‘There is no god but God, Muhammad is the Messenger of God’, followed by salat (prayer), zakat (almsgiving), sawm ramadan (fasting) and hajj (pilgrimage). These important collective practices create a strong sense of unity. The rich material culture associated with religious life also reflects the wide range of spiritual expressions in Muslim societies around the world - different forms of prayer, the significance of pilgrimage in a Muslim’s life, and approaches to funerary rites in Islam – a diversity that continues to the present day.
